U.S.S. Franklin's Ship Guest Log
I WAS A MoMM2/C "A" DIV.WITH MY BATTLE STATION THE GM 671 EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERRATORS ON THE HANGER DECK ON A 3 MONTH ASSIGMENT AS MESS NAASTER0AT0ARMS AND WHEN WE SECURED FROM GENERAL QUAERWES I WEENT BELOW TO THE FORWARD MESS HALL TO NAKE SURE THE MESS COOKS WERE READY TI SERVE BREAKFAST WHEN THE SHIP WAS HIT.BEING THE MESSS MAASTER-AT-ARMS PROBABLY SAVED MY LIFE.
My uncle, S1C James A. Forberger, was killed on 19 March 1945.
My grandfathers name was Stanley Eugene Free (Jerry or Big Red).He was on final approach to land his Corsair when the Franklin got hit by those two bombs. Blew up right in front of him. He and his wingman had to beg permission to land on another carrier in the task force. As soon as he landed, they pushed his plane over the edge.
I am trying to locate Bill E. Smith, a former crewmember, from Oakland, CA
I was working on a little genealogical research and found your site. Donald Gary was my great-grandfater's brother and we've treasured pictures and stories of the Franklin and Uncle Don for years. It was such a treat to read Mr. Stuart's tale of the Franklin and my great-uncle's heroism. I learned a few things the family hadn't been aware of before.
Thanks for a great site.

While reading an article regarding Coach John Wooden found out he was stationed on the Franklin till shortly before the deadly attack of March 19th. The person who took his post perished in the attack. I have been reading everything I can find about the ship and its crew.
His shipmates -- heroes all.
i would deeply appreciate hearing from anyone who knew Robert F McCracken. He was killed March 19 on his 21st birthday aboard the Franklin. I believe he was "gunner control".
Louis Dani of Lagrange, Ohio was my uncle. I occasionally worked in his greenhouse as a teenager. Uncle Lou was a wonderful man and I miss him since he passed away in October 2004. Lou was one of the deck-edge elevator operators as I understand it. He told me some stories of his experiences aboard the Franklin. I would welcome emails from anyone who knew him or knew of him from the Franklin.
I honor and respect all the heros that lost their lives witht his ship and those who survived
Today is the anniversary. If my father was still alive, I know where his thoughts would be today. To those survivors still living, may God bless you.
