and we were to hit the Jap fleet instead. At 0705 the Jap plane dropped
his bombs. I saw debris flying past, and the Jap plane pull
up. Mr. Mac
yelled into the I.C.S. (interphone) as near as I can quote, "It's a
raid--we've been hit! Get out!" Those are the last words I heard
him say. I piled out behind Hute, and we ran to the starboard side
of the ship as Mr. Mac cut his engine. The smoke was too thick there,
and when Hute got hopelessly entangled in a mob trying to get below
I lost him. That is the last I saw of him. I then crossed over the
flight deck to the port side aft. There were over 40 [70??] men huddled
together there, including our skipper (also missing) and Mr. Mac. Someone asked the skipper if he ---- [crossed-out word] was going over the side. The smoke was very thick, and because explosions were going off we were all crouched down, when I looked up again there was only about 4 [7??] of us left there. Mr. Mac was not one of them. I honestly
